Create a backup

Open Dashboard, find Your data, then choose Export backup. Save the .familytree file somewhere you trust. The archive includes profiles, relationships, memories, and saved photographs.

Restore an archive

Open Dashboard, choose Import backup, and select a Family Tree archive or compatible JSON archive. Import replaces the family tree stored on that device, so review the confirmation carefully.

If import fails, confirm that the file was exported by Family Tree and has not been edited or truncated. GEDCOM and CSV files are not currently supported. Keep the original file unchanged while troubleshooting.

Sync another device

Open Dashboard, choose Cloud sync, and sign in with the same Apple or Google account on each device. The local archive remains usable offline. When device and cloud copies contain competing edits, Family Tree keeps recovery copies and asks you to review the differences instead of choosing for you.

Share a separate family tree

In Cloud sync, create a read-only invitation and let the other person scan its QR code. Invitations expire after seven days. The shared tree opens as a separate read-only library and never imports people or relationships into the other person’s private archive. Either participant can end access.

A photograph does not appear

Choose the photograph again from the profile or memory editor. Family Tree stores its own protected copy after you confirm the crop, so removing the original from Photos should not remove the saved copy from the app.

Delete a cloud account

Open Dashboard, choose Cloud sync, then select Delete cloud account. Sign in again to confirm. This removes the authentication account and synchronized Firebase data while keeping the family tree already stored on this device. Export a backup first if you want another portable copy.

Your data and support

Family Tree works locally without an account or network connection. Cloud sync is optional, and your archive is never used for advertising.
